Tom Williams & The Boat, being timely, have
a terrific chance to make a break for the shore right
now, bequeathing the land-folk with tales of the high
seas and coating them in authentic sprays of spittle
to boot, thanks mainly to the path Mumford & Sons have
beaten to the mainstream. It is true that anthemic folk
music is that man Tom’s thing and that he is handy with
a guitar and his trembling, trunk-like vocal, but even
on new single ‘Concentrate’ alone we are reminded of,
on top of the petitioning passions of say Billy Bragg
and Chris TT (with whom he is appropriately touring
at present), the fire of Gaslight Anthem, melodic nous
of Talking Heads, gusting drive of The Delgados and
jib of the early Libertines. It’s certainly enough to
be going on. And that’s before you even get anywhere
near their website and find the video of them covering
Dizzee Rascal’s ubiquitous ‘Bonkers’, bluegrass style.
Which, quirky though it might be, is at least as good
as it sounds. We went paddling to find out where Tom’s
head is at…
